The New Girl

Ever wonder how many new girls go home and cry?

Stare into darkness as the mocking hours slip by?

I don't know about you, but
I know what it’s like to be new
Never sure what you’re s’posed to do
All alone, feeling lost and rather blue
Nervous
Lonely
Hurt
Afraid
No one
There to
Give you
Aid
Left out
Neglected
Shy
Unseen
Unsure if
They are
Being
Mean
Or just not….thinking?

Ever wonder how the new girl feels?
If her life rocks and reels?
Maybe just transplanted, all alone?
Trying to find her way in a world completely unknown?
Ever wonder  how the new girl feels?
Is she bored
or could she be shy?
Unfriendly, or just plain
terrified?

...Of you?

Hanging on the outside of a group

Scared to try and break into the loop—
Standing by a closed door
Staring down at the floor
Sure that they laugh at and deplore me
Silently.

Ever wonder how the new girl feels?
How do you treat the new girl?
How do I treat the girl, now that I know
How the new girl feels?

How do you make the new girl feel?

.............................................
~This poem is for the new girl~
..............................................

Don't just greet her,
get up
go meet her.
Make her smile, ask her questions
instead of left out, make sure she's left in!

And I know it can be hard for y'all to

walk over, reach out and talk to someone new.
Believe me, I've been there.
But remember that for you there's only one of her,
While to her, there are many more of you.

Please know that in this world you don't just

randomly
have a friend:
they don't appear from
nowhere.
You need to work
harder
for a happier end.
Look for the neglected places.
Go there.

  1. I remember being a perpetual new girl at a church we used to attend. It was quite awkward, as I had known some of the girls for years. But they would never greet me or stop to chat with me. So from that experience, I *try* to include the new girls. Honestly, I don't know if I make them feel awkward or if it is taken how it is intended.
To any girls who feel overlooked, I have definitely been there. It can take you closer to Jesus, and as Michaela says, allow you to be compassionate to other new girls. So let's take this advice and really get to know the "new girls!" Thank you for sharing, Michaela.

  2. Thank you for taking the time to comment, Bethany! I think that most people have had some level of experience as both the insider and the outsider, or else they will eventually. But we all have different things we struggle with that we need to have that pointed out and be reminded of it so that we can be proactive in the way we approach and connect with people. Again, I am the worst person in the world at this! I am so much better as a writer than a talker...maybe because writing is a smaller sphere that I have more control of. Anyway, we all need encouragement in some area in this and to learn to start seeing when something is needed. This is friendship. This is life.

  3. Been there. Felt that. This poem is completely realistic.
